Protect Yourself. Do it Legally

Music/Movie File Sharing (RIAA/DMCA)

The best way to protect yourself is to use a legitimate media downloading solution. These solutions are completely legal and will save you the time and the frustation of having to worry about copyright infringement (which can be read about in more detail below). To assist you, ResNet has gathered some links to legal downloading solutions:

Some students wish to use their internet connection to engage in Peer To Peer file sharing and some to download copyrighted material illegally. Sharing/downloading copyrighted material is against the law. The Record industry has sued students at other colleges/universities and students have had to pay out thousands of dollars in fines. Don't put yourself at risk.

Stony Brook University has a no tolerance policy If DoIT/ResNet is contacted by a copyright enforcement agency (such as the RIAA or MPAA) about a student violating copyright law, that student's internet access is removed and they are reported to Academic Judiciary.
